In the heart of the resort town of Hanioti, just a hundred meters from the azure sea, stands the Church of Saint John Chrysostom. Built in the last century, the church features a bell tower and a small chapel. Its white stone walls blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, and it is located next to a well-maintained park area that separates it from the beach. The interior follows traditional design, with a wooden iconostasis and decorative elements, while a grand chandelier hangs from the ceiling. At the entrance, visitors can light candles.
Saint John Chrysostom (c. 347–407) was the Archbishop of Constantinople and one of the most influential theologians in Christianity. He is considered one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, alongside Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian.
After years of ascetic solitude, he was ordained as a priest and later became the Archbishop of Constantinople. His powerful oratory earned him the title "Chrysostom" (Golden-Mouthed). His reforms shaped liturgical practices, strengthened charity, and enforced discipline among the clergy. However, his unyielding stance against corruption provoked the ire of Empress Eudoxia, leading to his exile. Despite this, his theological works and the liturgy he composed remain an integral part of Orthodox Christian worship.
While Hanioti may lack significant historical landmarks, it draws visitors with its well-developed infrastructure, sandy beaches, and a variety of activities for both adults and children. The entire coastline, stretching nearly four kilometers, is a continuous expanse of golden sand lapped by crystal-clear waters. Numerous beach bars provide the perfect setting to unwind with a cocktail to the sound of the waves.
Water sports enthusiasts can rent motorboats, jet skis, canoes, paddleboards, catamarans, and water skis. The Swell Hanioti Watersports center, known for its excellent service, even offers flyboarding. From here, visitors can take a boat trip to Kelifos Island near Neos Marmaras for a swim in open waters. On land, bicycles and ATVs are available for rent, making it easy to explore the surroundings.
For children, there are two small amusement parks in addition to the beach. One, located near the Masoutis supermarket, features inflatable trampolines and arcade games. Another, near the Dionyssos Hotel, has a pool with slides and a go-kart track.
Hanioti is more about cozy evenings in stylish bars than wild parties. Among the best spots to enjoy a drink are Afros Cocktail Bar, Kelfos, and the uniquely designed Paralio Cocktail Bar.
