How to get

Kriopigi, translating to “cold spring” from Greek, owes its name to the chilly spring located near the central square. The landmark, adorned with stonework in 1937, stands as a symbol of the village. Water flows from three spouts in a shaded area, offering a refreshing retreat during the heat. Not far from the spring, an improvised outdoor amphitheater at the edge of a lush forest hosts events throughout the summer.

Near the spring, a bust commemorates chieftain Stamatios Kapsas, a local hero who gave his life for Greece’s freedom during the War of Independence against Ottoman rule.

Chieftain Kapsas and the fight for freedom

Stamatios Kapsas, also known as Chapsas, was a renowned klepht born in Kriopigi. By 1821, he held the position of serdar (watchman) for the monasteries of Mount Athos. That year, he joined Emmanouil Pappas to rally an army of monks and villagers for the Greek War of Independence. Despite early victories against Ottoman forces, Kapsas’ efforts to liberate Thessaloniki were thwarted by overwhelming Ottoman reinforcements.

Kapsas, with just 67 men, made a final stand near the Monastery of St. Anastasia at Vasilika, allowing civilians to escape. He and his men were killed in the battle, but his sacrifice is remembered through a monument near the site.
