How to get

The Kassandra Peninsula, the first "finger" of Halkidiki, is renowned for its natural beauty and historical landmarks. One of the stops on the way from Nea Skioni to Hanioti is the Church of St. Athanasius, located on a hill along the main road.

Although the church doors are usually closed, the spot is worth visiting for the panoramic view. From the viewpoint, there is a breathtaking perspective of both coastlines of the Kassandra Peninsula. The turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea peek through the surrounding olive groves. The landscape is especially stunning at sunset. Benches under a shelter provide a spot for a small picnic. You can light a candle by the entrance of the church, even if you can’t go inside.

Athanasius of Alexandria

The church is dedicated to St. Athanasius the Great, Archbishop of Alexandria, an outstanding theologian and defender of the purity of Orthodox doctrine. His life was marked by his struggle against Arianism—the belief that denied the divinity of Jesus Christ—exiles, and returns to his flock.

In his youth, Athanasius attracted the attention of Patriarch Alexander, who became his spiritual mentor. At the age of 28, Athanasius was ordained as a bishop, becoming the head of the Alexandrian Church. During his 45 years as bishop, he spent around 20 years in exile. His memory is honored on January 18 and May 2.

Nea Skioni

Nea Skioni is a small fishing village with a history dating back to 1918. Today, it is a traditional fishing village with a beautiful lagoon and a mild climate. Nea Skioni is a peaceful spot for a relaxing holiday or a starting point for exploring the peninsula.

The village’s key feature is the largest artificial lagoon on the peninsula. It is a popular place for fishing boats and yachts, as mooring here is free—a rarity for Halkidiki. Strolling along the lagoon is a favorite activity for both locals and tourists. In the morning and evening, an informal market sets up at the port, where you can buy fresh seafood—perfect for those who enjoy cooking their own meals.
